African big 5 hunting packages in South Africa and Zimbabwe with Hunting in Africa Safaris. To ensure your hunt is legal you have to comply with all African hunting laws per country (click here for a comprehensive list of legal minimum caliber hunting rifles per African country). The Professional Hunter (PH) that guides you on your dangerous game hunt needs to have a Big 5 license – this means he has sufficient African Big 5 hunting experience to keep you away from harm. It does not matter how much the cost of an African Big 5 hunting safari is, a professional hunter cannot buy experience.

Our African Big 5 hunting packages for 2014 and 2015 are all-inclusive. The cost of the Big five hunting safari includes all tags, fees, daily rates and trophy fee. You will be billed only once for all costs involved – the price you see is the price you pay. In the event of an African Big 5 hunt being unsuccessful in terms of a Big 5 animal not being harvested, you will not have to pay the trophy fee.

The Big 5 African animals are African elephant, Cape buffalo, lion, leopard and white rhino. To hunt African elephant, leopard and white rhino you need a special license in the form of a CITES tag. If we do not have a CITES tag a hunt cannot be legal. Of the African big 5 we consider the Cape buffalo as the most dangerous game animal to hunt.

Hunting dangerous game videos are in the VIDEOS section.

Perhaps you would like to give some thought to the idea of entertaining your wife on a second honeymoon package. Entertain your wife (or life partner) with the idea of coming to Africa on a hunt where she will be more than welcome. Sometimes she will be in a hide with us and other times if she so desires will stay in camp. We hunt till we filled all our tags and then head off on a photo safari of a few major tourist attractions like Sun City (a round of golf at the Gary Player designed golf course is recommended) and a cultural tour of a few of the local tribes. Then we head out to some of the big game parks where we can see the Big 5.

Of course we may not forget the all-important beauty treatment and massage left as a surprise!

A typical South African bow hunting safari trip will be as follows

Early morning wake-up call allowing you enough time to be awake when coffee / tea is served with traditional South African rusks. Oatmeal / muesli / yoghurt and cereals will be available to supplement a good start to a good bowhunting day. After morning coffee your Professional Hunter will accompany you to your bow hunting blind and assist in trophy judging the animals on your wish list.

From about 12:00 pm onwards you can expect to return for brunch and a quick rest before returning to your hide for the afternoon bowhunting session until dark. One alternative is to arrange with the kitchen to have a lunch pack prepared so you can stay out bow hunting all day.

Returning to the lodge we will have time to freshen up before a few drinks by the campfire are served celebrating another supreme South African bowhunting day before a traditional dinner is served consisting of game meat and other wonderful table fare.

Wingshooting in South Africa and bird Hunting in Africa Safaris

Our bird hunting philosophy is surprisingly simple: we want you to hunt a variety of birds while enjoying the outing!

Bird hunting is done according to law during the months of May – August each year in the open plains areas of the Free State Province of South Africa. We have a number of trained GSP’s (German Short-haired Pointers) at our disposal for your hunting pleasure to point, flush and retrieve your bird.

We limit the size of the group to three guns per group to ensure:

sustainable hunting allowing each hunter a fair shooting opportunity  exclusivity, it will only be you and your hunting friends we can accommodate more than one group at a time in different areas, alternatively talk to us with your specific requirements.

We offer the following bird hunting opportunities

Orange River francolin Cape turtle dove
Crested francolin Spurwing goose
Swainson’s francolin Egyptian goose
Grey-wing francolin Yellow-billed duck
Helmeted guinea fowl White faced duck
Rock pigeon Sand grouse
Mourning dove

There are times during the season when certain birds are available in abundance as opposed to too early or too late in the season. These are the pigeon- and dove species that congregate in huge numbers during harvesting season around August depending on the area where we have an opening. It is always a good idea to book your bird hunt at the beginning of the season so we can allocate the best hunting spots for you and your hunting partners.

Recommended shotgun gauge for wingshooting in South Africa

Due to limited availability of 20 ga shotgun shells from time-to-time, we recommend using a 12 ga shotgun for your planned wing shooting hunt. Should you only have a 20 ga shotgun for your bird hunt, please advise us so we can start looking for a supplier that will have stock.

A typical bird hunting day – bird hunting in Africa

Your wake-up call will be determined by the specie we are hunting for that particular morning and how far we need to travel to get to a reliable pond. For ducks and geese we prefer to be at the water early in the morning which implies you need to be woken earlier than on an average Saturday morning at home.

Wing shooting South Africa

We start the day with coffee or tea with traditional rusks and or yoghurt and cereal. No need to worry, we will have a packed lunch for later in the day during the lunch break. Bottled water and soft drinks will be available during the day and you need to make sure you have enough fluid on your person to keep yourself hydrated during the day’s walking.

At a pond/lake we have a pop-up blind from which hunting is conducted. A number of decoys are set up to attract ducks and geese and then the waiting game starts. As and when birds are successfully hunted a happy faced GSP will retrieve your quarry. Hunted birds are all utilised, either by us the hunting group, local charity organisations like Churches or local community members. South African bird hunters normally prefer to utilise their own birds.

Once the pond is not productive any more the hunting group relocates to either another pond, or we start hunting for a different specie altogether depending on the time of day. Once we have set up for the francolin species we start walking with the pointers running happily up and down the open fields investigating and marking their area. Once a bird or a covey of birds have been located the dogs go to point and allow the hunters to approach. Once a bird or birds have been flushed it is up to the hunter to do the rest.

We break for brunch and have something to eat in the shade of a tree to save travelling time. There are only two requirements the lunches need to adhere to: one is that there should be enough and two, it should be taste like eating at home!  Both these issues are met on our lunch packs.

Bird hunting South Africa

Bird hunting the afternoon session is much the same as the mid-morning time when we devote time to hunting guinea fowl, francolin and doves or pigeons.

In the late afternoon we head out to another pond where we set up for the late afternoon arrival of water fowl like Egyptian goose, spurwing goose and a number of duck species.

Bird hunting South Africa

Celebrating the end of a successful hunting day on the way back to the lodge with a cold beer (or a warm Old Brown Sherry!) we arrive in time for a shower and time around the fire. The time by the fire is mostly spent recapping the great (and not so great) shots of the day before a wonderful home cooked meal is served.

Please note that we start hunting on the day of arrival the moment we arrive at the hunting concession and on the day of departure we leave after brunch. Both these days are considered full hunting days. We recommend 3 days hunting and limit the hunts to 4 continuous days per group or individual.
